5M is Mix 96 Classroom of the Month!

On Thursday our class went to the Mix 96 Radio Station and had a wonderful experience. The students took a tour of the station, and they were able to check out the equipment that the station uses. They were even able to record their own individual commercials for the station and they even went live on air!

It was all wrapped up with a delicious lunch provided by Boston Pizza. A huge thanks to Mix 96 and Boston Pizza for the amazing morning they provided for us!

Spider and Bats Come to 5M!

This afternoon, the grade 5's had a great time decorating some painted gourds. Students were each given a black painted gourd to decorate for Halloween. The result was many creepy crawling spiders, and some very mischievous looking bats!

Back from the Long Weekend...

The kids had quiet start to the short week, could be they were all so tired from the turkey overload, I know I was! This is a picture of the best Daily 5 session we have had to date! There is always room for improvement, but it was great today!

Just a reminder that there is no spelling words this week but we are starting with math fact tests this week.

Swimming!

We had our first swimming trip of the year this week. It was my first time going, and I had a blast watching the kids in the pool, I can't wait until next time when I can join them in the pool! It seemed like it was a great time had by all. There are still a couple of people that need to pay their swimming fees as well as their student fees, if that can be done as soon as you are able, that would be great! Here are some pictures of splishing and splashing!

I'd Like to Introduce You to...Mulvey's Millionaires!

We had our first full week in grade 5 and it was great! We have started some of our units in Math, Social Studies, and Science. The students had the opportunity to begin to make our cheques in the computer lab for their 5M accounts, which we will finish this upcoming week. We ended the week with a Gym Blast and by winning the football game. It was a great week and I'm looking forward to many more!

Welcome to 5M!

Welcome to our classroom! The purpose of this blog is to keep students and parents updated with the on-goings of our classroom. There are tabs at the top of the blog that will take you to the selected section and fill you in on what we are doing in those subjects. On the side there is a calendar of events and notes from the teacher which will include reminders of events. I try my best to keep the blog up to date and I hope that you find it easy to use! I am looking forward to a fantastic year with you!

A Great Day at Austin Museum!

The weather cooperated and we had a fantastic time at the Manitoba Agricultural Museum! 2M and 2T students and parent volunteers had a blast as they traveled through time back to the olden days.
The kids went through 6 different hands on stations where they; watched a blacksmith in action and got a horseshoe nail necklace, they made rope at the General Store, they made candles in an old house, they did laundry the old fashioned way and received some homemade soap, they sat in an old school and used a quill and ink, and they worked with sheep's wool and watched it be made to yarn.

I think a great day was had by all and the kids got a lot of exercise walking to the stations and they learned a lot about the way things used to be.

A huge thanks to our parent volunteers who made it possible for Mrs. Thornton and I to walk around taking pictures and trouble shooting issues.

Our New Pet Shark!

Thanks to the generous donations from our class, we were able to donate a Blue Shark from the World Wildlife Fund. As a class we raised $40 dollars that will go to help protect this endangered species. Great job 2M and thank you to all that donated!

Here is our class with our Blue Shark and our adoption paper.

Community Clean-Up!

The entire school took part in a community clean-up yesterday afternoon. Our class went down 3rd St NW and clean up the street, the yards and the 2 parks located on that street. It was a beautiful day to be walking around our school community helping to keep it clean. To thank students with their help we will be having a pancake breakfast Wednesday morning.

Thank You Miss. Rud!

Miss. Rud has been working in our class since September. She worked in 2M every Friday, and also spent 11 full weeks in our classroom. She has been a huge help in the classroom, and the kids will truly miss her. As of right now she has completed her first year of Education, so she has one more year of student teaching until she is finished and can start her teaching career. We wish you all the best Miss Rud!

We had a going away party for Miss. Rud on Friday!

Welcome Back from Spring Break!

I hope that everyone had a fantastic Spring Break! This is the beginning of the last term of the year, so hard to believe that it has gone so quickly! This term we are lucky to have Miss. Rud returning for the month of April. She is be teaching the students their last Science and Social Studies units. Also, for the next 2 weeks, we will be learning some African drumming as part of an Art Smarts Project. We had a demonstration today and I think the kids will really love it! A lot of learning and a lot of fun is going to be taking place in 2M!

Math Week!

Pattern Day

The kids have done many different things for Math Week. We dressed in our favourite numbers, shapes and patterns. We made leprechaun glyphs, a class tangram, art with geometric shapes and we will end Friday with Mathernoon where kids will be put into groups to travel to different math stations. Students earn "Naish Cash" when they chose to participate in an activity. Our class goal was to make $5000 in Naish Cash and our reward would be to play on the hills in the back Monday afternoon. We have surpassed our goal so dress warmly on Monday!

The Paperbag Princess and More!

This afternoon was a fantastic way to wrap up literacy month. We were able to watch the
Prairie Exchange Theatre perform: The Paperbag Princess and More!

The 3 actors pictured above acted out some of our favourite Robert Munsch books including:
50 Below Zero, Thomas' Snowsuit, The Paperbag Princess, and a few more.

The actors were outstanding and the kids really enjoyed the performance!

I Love to Read!

Our school's theme for I Love to Read Week is many cultures, many readers. The book that we chose to decorate our door with is; Moses Goes to School. This is a book about a deaf student that attends a deaf school and it teaches American Sign Language. The students really enjoyed learning about deaf culture and ASL. For our door, every student is doing a letter from the ASL alphabet. Make sure you check out the door at Student-Led Conferences!

Students also took part in dress like a book character, PJ day (my personal favourite) and a beard making contest.

They also took part in an awesome outdoor reading of The Red Sash with Mrs. Vanstone. It included hot chocolate, bannock and a great story. Thanks Mrs. Vanstone!

Home Reading Party a Success!

The weather managed to hold out for us before it got miserable out! The kids had a great time playing outside in the snow. We made snowmen, snow angels, played tag and had some free time to play on the hills. It was wonderful to have the whole back field to ourselves!

When we were tuckered out from running through the snow, we went inside to enjoy some treats and started the movie Despicable Me.

What a great afternoon, and what a great way to celebrate our Home Reading Successes! To everyone that makes the Home Reading Program a success, thank you! Your hard work and efforts are showing!

Snow angels...

Snowmen! Little snowmen because the snow wasn't sticking as much as we hoped!

Home Reading Party

On Friday January 28th we will be having our Home Reading Party. This afternoon we held a vote to decide on what we will do for our Home Reading Party. A majority of the kids decided that they want to play on the hills at the back of the school and come in for a treat. So that is our plan...if the weather cooperates. If Friday is as bitter cold as it has been we will hunker down for a movie and treats, but hopefully the weather cooperates and we can play outside for some of the afternoon. So please send you child dressed to play in the snow: ski pants, warm jackets, toques, mittens...the whole bit! Thanks so much for participating in the Home Reading Program!

Welcome Back!

I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday! I am looking forward to the new year! We will begin the new year in full swing! We will continue to work on our routines: Daily 5, Spelling, Math Facts and Home Reading. We will also begin working on Growth and Changes in Animals for Science, the community of Lunenburg for Social Studies, story writing, and we will continue to work on numbers.

I have planned a Home Reading Party for the end of January to get us back into the swing of things. So those students that don't miss more than 3 days of Home Reading this month will be able to attend while those that don't will complete work.
