Holidays are Around the Corner...

The Christmas holidays are right around the corner and students are still hard at work. Students are continuing to practice daily for the Christmas concert next Tuesday.

In the classroom students are busy with a couple of activities, they are currently working on "presents" for all of the students in the class in which every student must fill everyone's buckets by saying something positive on a small present. Tomorrow we will be watching Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and follow it up with a writing activity next week. We have a busy week and a half left, but the kids seem to be enjoying it.

A Busy Month Ahead...

With one more month until the winter break, there is much to be done in 5M. With the term winding down, I will be collecting marks for the students in the next few weeks. Students are currently working hard preparing a Social Studies Project, a Health project and we will begin reviewing for a Science test next week. On top of all this, students are also preparing for the Christmas Concert! With all of these things going on, it's important that students are attending school in order to receive marks, and also to practice for the Christmas Concert with us.

Student Led Conferences

Students have been hard at work this week preparing their portfolios and practicing them. These Student Led Conferences are a celebration of your child's work and an opportunity for them to share their progress with you. I know that they are looking forward to sharing their accomplishments, and I also look forward to meeting with you.

Remembrance Day

Students participated in a Remembrance Day service at school on Thursday, November 8. We discussed the importance of taking the time to remember and be thankful for all veterans who have served our country and for all those soldiers that are currently serving. Please take time on Sunday to honour those who fought for our freedom.

Grey Cup Train!

It was a rather chilly Thursday afternoon that we journeyed to the Grey Cup Train, but it was well worth it. Students enjoyed checking out the museum on the train which included CFL memorabilia of Grey Cup rings, uniforms and of course, the Grey Cup. Outside the train was a penny puncher that was changing pennies into football shaped pennies, a chance to hang out with Buzz and Boomer, and a football toss. A great time had by all!

Great Start to the Year!

It was a very short week of school, but I feel like we accomplished a lot. We reviewed many of the rules and procedures that will be apart of our entire year together. Next week we will begin with regular programming. We did spend some time getting to know each other this week and we did have some fun...as you can see below.

Dog Days of June...

Things are winding downa for grade 5 and it's hard to believe that we have less than 2 weeks of school remaining! Last Friday I brought my dogs in the afternoon for a play and the kids seemed to really enjoy running and playing with them. We are nearing the end of grade 5 and there are some fun things that will be taking place in the few remaining weeks. I hope the kids enjoy their last few days in grade 5!

A Chilly Track and Field Day

Despite the weather, the grade 5's seemed to have a great time at their first track and field meet! The weather didn't hold back the competition, and everyone did well in all of their events. A reminder that high jump has been postponed until tomorrow morning due to the weather. All students that placed first or second in their events will be talking to Mr. S and Mrs. Brown in the very near future to discuss cities with them. Great participation everyone!

5M is a Class of Busy Bees!

It is getting to be a busy time of year in 5M! There are many activities and events that have taken place and many more to come in the upcoming weeks! We started off the week by participating in a Community Clean Up - where students from the school cleaned up streets around our school. By the time we returned to the school, we had 4 full garbage bags! Great job 5M! As a thank you to students we had a pancake breakfast the following morning.

Today we had a Canadian Geography Challenge Game Show with all of the 4-6 students. 3 students from each class were put on a 4-6 team and were asked Canadian Trivia questions. Our representatives were Kailey, Haylee and Jayden. They all did a great job and we had a fantastic time watching you!

Due to the busy time of year, we have stepped away from our routines such as spelling and facts. Next week is a 4 day week, with our LVS track meet on Thursday which will be a great experience and I'm really looking forward to it. We have also dedicated a lot of our class time for practicing the musical which will be in the evening on May 29th. It's a busy time and the kids and myself are enjoying our last remaining weeks together.

5M French Poetry Winners!

This past week we had 6 of our students compete at the French Poetry Competition held at EAMS. Kailey Banfield, Haylee Fedorchuk, Tabitha Onigbinde, Jayden Peterson, Arthur Gladue and Jesse Lacroix competed against 30 other 5/6 students in the division. All of the students did an amazing job saying their poems in front of the judges as well as a room full of people. Mrs. Vanstone and myself are so proud of these students not only for their performances, but also how they represented our school and class; they were a class act from start to finish. We managed to clean out the competition with Jesse winning 3rd place, and Haylee winning 1st place! Haylee will move on to represent our division in Winnipeg. Congratulations to all who competed, we couldn't be more proud of all of you!

Happy Spring Break!

The kids participated in a number of Spirit Week and Numeracy activities this week. We watched the Minute to Win It Staff Edition, the Jr. High students play the teachers in basketball, we participated in an awesome Gym Blast with new equipment, a math filled afternoon and we watched the Jr.High's duct tape fashion show and finished the week by putting pies in my face! It was a great week and I look forward to seeing everyone after the break!

French Activity Day!

The kids had a fantastic day yesterday participating in our school's French Activities Day. Students took part in 10 stations which included: eating bannock and pea soup, relay races, face painting, an obstacle course, tug of war, a sleigh ride, leg wrestling, stories with a Voyageur, arm wrestling, jigging, and observing France's national sport, soccer, played between the 6-8 students against the teachers.

The day was engaging and the students seemed to have a fantastic day. It seemed as though the tug of war and challenging the teachers to arm wrestling and leg wrestling were the highlight of the day for most students!

A huge thanks to Mrs. Heppner, Miss Blight, and Mr. Peters for all of their hard work planning the day!

Festival du Voyageur!

The kids (and teachers!) enjoyed a wonderful day outdoors for our Festival du Voyageur adventure. Students were able to spend some time sledding, climbing the hills, checking out the snow sculptures, shopping in the souvenir shops and seeing all the sights and sounds that the Festival has to offer... and that was all during free time! During our first scheduled session, students learned about the modes of transportations that the Voyageurs utilized and then enjoyed a horse powered sleigh ride. For our second and final session we journeyed into the Maple Forest to learn about tapping the maple trees for sap, and enjoying maple syrup that they rolled in the snow. The weather was perfect, the little bit of snow made the event more festive, and the small dip in the temperature made the walks around the Fort solid rather than slushy, it was a great day enjoyed by all!

Jumping Back to Work!

Jumping back to work and in this case jumping on the boat! Here is a picture of our grade 5's being introduced to our new Social Studies unit: Explorers and Vikings. Students measured out the size of the standard Knarr ship that the Vikings used and while "sitting in the boat" we talked of the hardships these people endured.

We also jumped back into our usual routines of spelling, Daily 5, novel study and daily worksheets this week and we will begin our new Science unit of Weather tomorrow.
