Happy Holidays!

It's hard to believe that the end of 2013 is upon us! The past few months have flown by and for the past week we have been having a great time doing Christmas activities. Today we delivered the "warm fuzzies" that we prepared for each other and it was great to see the smile on the kids faces when they read what the other kids think of them.

We ended the day with some Christmas Minute to Win it Games which was a hoot!

Tomorrow the Mulvey Store will be opened in the morning for the kids to go shopping with the money they've earned and we will end the day relaxing with a movie. I'd like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday and a Happy New Year! See you in 2014!

Dear Santa...

Students were hard at work preparing letters to Santa today! It's hard to believe that there are only a few weeks left until the holiday break! We are looking forward to winding down the next few weeks with some festive activities and good times. This Christmas season I am truly thankful for the amazing class I have, they make my home away from home a wonderful place to be!

Student Led Conferences

The students and I have been busy this week preparing for the Student Led Conferences this Thursday and Friday. We have been putting our portfolios together and practicing what we are going to share with you. Student Led Conferences are a fabulous way to celebrate your child's successes this term. I do hope you are able to take the time to look at your child's work. I look forward to seeing you this Thursday or Friday!

First Gym Blast of the Year!

Students enjoyed their first middle years Gym Blast on Friday. The students and myself had a blast competing in the events. We had several relay events including making a chain, popping balloons, and spinning around until we are dizzy and running. We ended the gym blast with the whole class pushing Xavier across the gym in our sea of waves!

5M Classroom Brain!

This past week all of the students completed a Multiple Intelligence Survey to see what their multiple intelligence is and to determine what kind of learners they are. We then took all of the different intelligences that are present in the class and made a classroom brain. The brain shows that we all have of our strengths, and that they may differ from others, but our differences is what makes us a community. Once we put our wrinkle in the brain, we staked our claim to it declaring ourselves as experts in our intelligence. The brain can be used as a reference point for other students to seek help when they are struggling in a task, they can find an expert in the field and ask for help.

Track and Field and Many Other Things on the Horizon!

Students are currently preparing for their first Track and Field Meet. They are very excited, as am I, it is so great to see them being active and trying new things! I walked in on their first class of learning Triple Jump today, and took some pictures.

The LVS Track Meet is scheduled for Thursday May 23, with a rain date of May 27 - if it looks iffy, you'll have to listen to the radio for updates. Students are responsible for their transportation to Yellowquill School for the track meet, and they are responsible for their own transportation home. Students who qualify for the the City Track Meet will be notified and details will be given to those students.

POW!

POW was a hit at LVS on Tuesday night, with over 81 students attending! I was happy to hear that their were many of our very only 5M participants as well! What a great opportunity for all students. Here is a picture of our own Julia Gabriel, assisting with the demonstration at the school.
By the end of the demonstration, many kids from the school joined in dancing.

February is a Busy Month!

This month is already flying by and we haven't even gotten to the busy events yet! This week we will be having a Valentines Day Party on Thursday afternoon. A note and class list will be sent home today with details.

Next week is where it really gets busy! There is no school on Monday February 18th for Louis Riel Day, and on the 19th we are going to Festival du Voyageur! Permission slips and money for the trip are due this week. Parent Teacher forms with desired dates to attend Student Led Conferences are also due on February 12th. We also have swimming next Wednesday morning (February 20th) , and Student Led Conferences on Thursday evening and Friday during the day of next week.

Our class is also joint hosting the Respect Assembly on February 28th, so students are busy preparing our portfolios for Student Led Conferences and getting things ready for our Percy Jackson Project for the assembly, the busy part of the month is approaching and things are looking great!

Respecting Diversity

Our first week of 2013 was spent learning about ourselves, our multiple intelligences and our learning styles. We started off the week talking about being tolerant, respectful and kind to all individuals despite our differences.

We then continued the week with lessons about learning about ourselves as learners. As a class, students filled in a survey about their likes and interests. We took that information and graphed our multiple intelligences which tell us about our learning styles.

Students then took ownership of their multiple intelligence and agreed to assist others with their specialty if asked, and we constructed a Classroom Brain that students can refer to. We then discussed the importance of knowing that we all learn in different ways, rates and styles.

We are beginning to wrap up our lesson on multiple intelligences, we are finishing by discussing careers that are connected to the multiple intelligences, and we're going to discuss what the world would look like if everyone had the same multiple intelligence, and what it would look like if we were missing each of them. The students really seemed to enjoy learning about themselves, and discussing how we are all different and embracing those differences - Respecting Diversity. It was a great experience to be apart of.
