Daily 5
We will be doing a literacy program called the Daily 5 on a daily basis. The idea behind the Daily 5 is for students to have exposure to all aspects of literacy everyday. The words CAFE at the top of the board stand for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary. Students select one of these as a goal to pursue until we feel that their goal has been achieved and they then select another goal to work on.
Students work on these goals everyday by doing one of the 5 activities - Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Writing, and Word Work. Our class will spend 30 minutes a day on one of these activities, and then do another activity everyday until they have completed all 5 and then we repeat again.
This program gives students independence as they work on their goals by themselves during the activities, and it gives me an opportunity to work with students one on one.
Spelling
Students will write their spelling words for the week in their agendas on Monday as well as their sorts. Students will have WTW every other week. We are running the Words Their Way program. It is my first year running the program, so I am still learning!
